The Canadian Parliament passed new legislation in June 2016 permitting citizens to seek physician-assisted suicide or "medical aid in dying" as a means of escaping from intolerable suffering caused by incurable disease. The new law followed the "Carter decision" of the Supreme Court of Canada issued in February 2015.The legislation has provoked controversy with some claiming that it is over-restrictive in its provisions and others claiming that it is sinful and should not exist at all.The book aims to trace the history of medical aid in dying and the arguments for and against. It also sketches the current arrangements in place in the ten provinces and three territories of Canada. Since its implementation about 1500 Canadians have availed themselves of its provisions.
