Hoy en día sabemos que el sistema nervioso controla y regula la mayoría de las actividades del organismo. Éste recibe, integra, procesa la información y envía diferentes señales para regular múltiples funciones, desde la puesta en marcha de la misma conducta hasta la regulación de diferentes mecanismos homeostáticos y de los sistemas endocrino e inmunitario. El sistema nervioso no sólo establece un puente de unión entre la información proveniente del medio y la respuesta que da el organismo para adecuarse a las demandas cambiantes del entorno, sino que nos convierte en lo que somos, subyacentes a nuestras emociones, a la resolución de problemas, a la inteligencia, al pensamiento, a capacidades tan humanas como el lenguaje, la atención o los mecanismos de aprendizaje y memoria.
